Fenugreek Gravy (Vendhaya Kulambu)

Fenugreek Seeds Curry, Methi Gravy, Vendhaya Kulambu


  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Tamarind – 1 lemon size
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tspn
  • Brinjal or Drumstick – 3 nos
  • Hing – a pinch (optional)
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 4 tbsp

Roast and then Grind:

  • Fenugreek seeds- 1tbsp
  • Thur dal – 11/2 tbsp
  • Dry chilli – 4
  • Coconut – 1/2
  • Turmeric powder – a pinch


  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add Fenugreek seeds, Thur dal, Dry chillies and fry till it turns golden brown. Then add coconut and a pinch of Turmeric powder, mix well for 2min and remove from heat. Grind this as a paste.
  2. Soak Tamarind in water for 20 minutes. Then extract tamarind water from this.
  3. Heat oil in a pan. Add Mustard seeds, Tamarind water, Turmeric powder, Salt, Brinjal and mixwell. Allow this to boil.
  4. Then add the ground paste. Mix well and cook till gravy is thick.
  5. Remove from heat . If necessary, you can add a pinch of Hing.
  6. Instead of Brinjal or Drumstick, you can use yellow Pumpkin also.

Goes well with: Rice
