Sambar – Thuvaram paruppu sambar

Sambar curry,Sambhar recipe


  • Read gram dal (split)-6 spoon
  • Garlic- 2
  • Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  • Tamarind- a gooseberry size
  • Onion- ½
  • Garlic- 1
  • Tomato- 1
  • Brinjal- 2
  • Potato- 1
  • Masala powder- 1 spoon
  • Oil and Salt- as required

For seasoning:

  • Mustard seeds and Urad dal- 1/2 tsp
  • Hing- 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves- few
  • Onion- ½


  1. Chop Onion, Garlic, Tomato, Brinjal, Potato and keep aside.
  2. Soak Tamarind for 10 min and take pulp from the Tamarind.
  3. Cook Red gram dal, two Garlic cloves and Turmeric powder in pressure cooker or in a vessel.
  4. Cook Onion, Garlic, Tomato, Brinjal, Potato with Masala powder in another vessel.
  5. For seasoning:Heat oil in a pan. Add Mustard seeds,Urad dal, Cumin seeds and Fenugreek seeds.Once it splutter, add curry leaves, Onion, Hing and fry till it turns into golden brown.
  6. Finally add Tamarind pulp, cooked Red gram dal and Vegetables. Cook for another 3 to 5 min and remove from heat.

Goes well with: Rice
