Urad dal chutney

Urad dal Chutney, Ulunthu thuvayal

Ingredients:

  • Urad dal – 1/4 cup
  • Red chili – 4 to 5
  • Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Tamarind – small gooseberry size
  • Coconut(grated)  – 4 tspn
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Hing – 3 to 4 pinches
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 2 tspn

For tampering:

  • Mustard seeds and Urad dal – 1/2 tspn
  • Onion – 1 or 2 tspn
  • Curry leaves – a sprig

Recipe:

  1. Heat a tspn of Oil in a pan. Add Urad dal, Red chilies and Garlic, fry till dal turns golden brown.
  2. Then add grated Coconut, Tamarind, Hing and Curry leaves. Fry for 1 or 2 minutes and remove from heat.
  3. Grind these fried ingredients with Salt and make a coarse chutney.Add water while grinding.
  4. For tampering: Heat a tspn of Oil in a pan, add Mustard seeds and Urad dal. Once the seeds starts spluttering add Onion and Curry leaves, saute till Onion turns golden brown. Then pour this mix to the chutney.

Goes well with:  Dosa or Idly or Rice
