Zucchini Dal

Zucchini Dal, Pasi paruppu,Green gram dal koottu simple recipe


  • Green gram dal(pasi paruppu) – 3/4 cup
  • Zucchini – 1
  • Onion – 1 cup (chopped)
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tspn
  • Hing – a pinch
  • Masala powder or Chili powder – 1 tspn
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 1 tspn

For tampering:

  • Mustard seeds and Urad dal – 1/2 tspn
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Oil – 1 tspn


  1. Cut Zucchini into small pieces. Don’t peel since most of the nutrients are in the skin. Wash the dal in water.
  2. Mix cut Zucchini, Onion, Green gram dal, Turmeric powder, Hing and Masala powder in a pan with a tspn of oil.
  3. Add enough water to cook Zucchini and Green gram dal. Cover and cook this on stove top. Check for water once in a while if there is not enough water in green gram dal.
  4. After the dal is cooked add salt, then do the tampering.
  5. For tampering: Heat a tspn of oil in a small pan. Add Mustard seeds and Urad dal, once it starts spluttering add curry leaves. Then remove from heat and pour this mix to the dal .

Goes well with: White Rice

Variation: Use any other squash family vegetable(like Bottle gourd, Ridge gourd) instead of Zucchini.
